Salt
Most processed foods, like crackers, chips, and most anything that comes in a bag or a box, are heavily coated in salt. Sure, salt makes food extra tasty, but it also increases your blood pressure and depletes your body of potassium, which is essential for a properly functioning nervous system. In short, salt can mess with your brain, making you vulnerable to added stress. For this reason, you may consider cutting it out of your diet, or at least decreasing how much of it you consume.
VINNY’S MENTAL WORKOUT
Check Yourself
My advice is simple: figure out what foods work best for you by becoming mindful of how they make you feel physically and mentally. How do you do this? Check in with your body before you eat, just after you eat, and several times throughout the day.
For example, do you go into a meal feeling famished and run-down? If so, you may not be eating the right amount of foods that give you long-term, sustainable energy. After finishing a meal, do you feel alert and energized or heavy and lethargic? If you feel heavy, your portion size may be too big, or maybe you’re eating foods with hidden sugars that give you a quick lift before dropping you three stories. Also ask yourself, How do I feel throughout the day? Cool, calm, and alert or crazy and stressed? If it’s the latter, maybe there’s too much salt and caffeine in your diet.
Become super aware of how you feel physically and mentally. If you’re feeling bad, take a good look at what you’re putting in your body. And then don’t be surprised at what you discover. A double order of chili cheese fries at midnight is probably not going to sit well with you the next day. A cupcake and a double espresso for lunch probably won’t give you the right amount of energy to carry you throughout the afternoon. Be aware of, and take personal responsibility for, how your food choices affect you physically and mentally. Only you control what goes into your body, so it’s up to you to decide what’s best for you.
